Maa Saraswati
Vasant Panchami, also known as Magh Shukla Panchami falls in the Hindu calendar month of Magh (January-February). ‘Vasant’ comes from the word ‘spring’ and this festival heralds the beginning of the spring season.
Vasant Panchami is the festival dedicated to Mata Saraswati, the Goddess of learning. It is the birthday of Goddess Saraswati and is a festival full of religious, seasonal and social significance. It is celebrated by Hindus all over the world with verve and great enthusiasm.
Yellow color is given special importance on this day. On Vasant Panchami, Goddess Saraswati is dressed in yellow garments and worshipped (with Puja, Havan etc.). Men and women try to wear yellow clothes on this day. Even the food is colored yellow by using saffron (kesar). Sweetmeats of yellowish hues are exchanged with relations and friends. There is also a custom of ancestor worship, known as ‘Pitri-Tarpan’ in many parts of India during Vasant Panchami.
On this memorable day, Lord Shiva burnt the god of love (kama), Cupid. The gods had sent Cupid to tempt the Lord while he was absorbed in Samadhi, in order to beget a powerful son who would be able to destroy the wicked demon, Tarakasura. Cupid discharged an arrow at Lord Shiva from behind a tree. Lord Shiva became very greatly enraged. He opened His third eye and reduced Cupid to ashes.
One should worship Ma Saraswati in the morning on this day. Ma Saraswati is believed to reside in the books and pens as well. Therefore, these articles too are worshipped on this day. The following widely popular Saraswati Vandana may be recited on this day:

वसंत पंचमी माँ सरस्वती का प्रागट्य दिवस है । सारस्वत्य मंत्र लिये हुए जो भी साधक है, सरस्वती माँ का पूजन करे और सफेद गाय का दूध मिले अथवा गाय के दूध की खीर बनाकर सरस्वती माँ को भोग लगाये । सफेद पुष्पों से पूजन करें और जिन विद्यार्थियों ने मेरे से सारस्वत्य मंत्र लिया है वे तो खास जीभ तालू पर लगाकर सारस्वत्य मंत्र का जाप उस दिन करेंगे तो वे प्रतिभासम्पन्न आसानी से हो जायेंगे ।
वसंत पंचमी सरस्वती माँ का आविर्भाव दिवस है । जो भी पढ़ते हो और शास्त्र आदि या जो भी ग्रन्थ, उनका आदर-सत्कार करो । पेन-कलम आदि का आदर-सत्कार-पूजन करो । और भ्रूमध्य में सूर्यदेव का ध्यान करो । जिससे पढ़ाई-लिखाई में आगे बढ़ोगे ।

या कुंदेंदु तुषारहार धवला, या शुभ्र वस्त्रावृता |
या वीणावर दण्डमंडितकरा, या श्वेतपद्मासना ||

जो चन्द्रमा समान मुखमंडल लिए, हिम जैसे श्वेत कुंद फूलों के हार और शुभ्र वस्त्रों से अलंकृत हैं|
जो हाथों में श्रेष्ठ वीणा लिए श्वेत कमल पर विराजमान हैं||
ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश आदि देवगण भी जिनकी सदैव स्तुति करते हैं|
हे मां भगवती सरस्वती, आप मेरी सारी मानसिक जड़ता को दूर करो||

Salutations to the Supreme Goddess Saraswati, whose face is fair as a jasmine flower, luminescent like the moon and delicate as a snow flake; who is dressed in brilliant white (shubhra-) garments (vastraA-). She holds the musical instrument (vINA-) in her hands to bestow boons (varada.nDa-) to her disciples as she sits on her white (shveta-) lotus (padma-) throne (aasanA-). She is dressed in white – the symbol of purity – and rides on a white swan – symbolizing Sattva Guna or purity and discrimination.

सारस्वत्य मंत्र का चमत्कारः वैज्ञानिक भी चकित
विद्यार्थी जीवन जीवनरूपी इमारत की नींव है। जितना हम ईश्वर के साथ जुड़कर कदम आगे रखते जायेंगे उतना ही हमारा जीवन मजबूत होगा किन्तु ईश्वर के साथ हृदय मिलाने की कला सिखाने के लिए सत्पुरूषों की, सदगुरू की आवश्यकता होती है। जिन भाग्यशाली विद्यार्थियों को ऐसे महापुरूषों का संग मिल जाता है, उनका कृपा प्रसाद मिल जाता है वे विद्यार्थी एक दिन स्वयं भी महान आत्मा बन जाते हैं। हमारे इतिहास में ऐसे अनेक उदाहरण हैं।
मुंबई के पास एक छोटे से गाँव में एक सातवीं कक्षा पढ़ा हुआ विद्यार्थी रहता था। उसका नाम था, रामानुजम। उस विद्यार्थी के पिता गरीब थे, इसलिए उन्होंने उसे एक बड़े सेठ की दुकान पर चपरासी की नौकरी पर लगा दिया। दुकान पर काम करने वाले मुनीम जब हिसाब करते-करते परेशान होकर थक जाते तब रामानुजम उनके पास आता और पूछता कि 'क्या बात है ?' तो मुनीम उसे डाँटते कि 'तेरे को क्या पता ? तू झाड़ू लगा।' ऐसा कई बार हुआ। एक दिन एक मुनीम ने कहा कि हररोज परेशान करता है, चल बैठ। मेरा एक खाता नही मिलता इसे ठीक से मिलाकर दिखा। रामानुजम ने क्षणभर में वह खाता मुनीम को सही-सही मिलाकर दे दिया। मुनीम आश्चर्य में पड़ गया कि कहाँ सातवीं पढ़ा हुआ यह लड़का और कहाँ मैं वर्षों से खाते बनाने वाला मुनीम ! यह मुझसे भी आगे कैसे निकल गया ? उसके बाद तो जिस किसी मुनीम को हिसाब किताब में परेशानी आती वह रामानुजम को बुलाता और रामानुजम गणित का उलझा हुआ बड़े से बड़ा मसला भी देखते-देखते क्षणभर में पूरा हल कर देते।
रामानुज की विलक्षण बुद्धि को देखकर लोगों ने रामानुजम से कहाः 'इस समय हार्डि विश्व का सबसे बड़ा गणितज्ञ है। तुम उसे अपनी योग्यता लिखकर भेजो।' रामानुजम ने अपना परिचय और गणित के कुछ नमूने हार्डि के पास भेज दिये। नमूनों को देखकर हार्डि चकित रह गया। उसने रामानुजम को बुलाया और रामानुज को गणित के कई सवाल पूछे। हार्डि जो भी सवाल पूछता रामानुजम उसका तुरन्त जवाब दे देते। आखिर भारत के इस सातवीं पढ़े विद्यार्थी ने विश्वविख्यात गणितज्ञ हार्डि को भी चकित कर दिया।
हार्डि ने रामानुजम की परीक्षा लेने के लिए बड़े-बड़े गणितज्ञों और मनोवैज्ञानिकों की एक बैठक बुलायी और बैठक में आये सभी गणितज्ञों को कह दिया कि गणित के विषय में जिसको जो भी प्रश्न पूछना हो वह रामानुजम से पूछ लें। वे लोग जो भी प्रश्न करते रामानुजम उसे ध्यानपूर्वक सुनते तथा क्षणभर के लिए शांत हो जाते है। फिर वे जो उत्तर देते थे वह बिल्कुल सही होता था।
इस घटना को देखकर मनोवैज्ञानिक भी दंग रह गये। अंत में उन्होंने रामानुज से ही पूछाः ''आपने इतने महान गणितज्ञ को भी पीछे कर दिया। आखिर आपके पास ऐसी कौन-सी कला है कि यहाँ आये सारे बड़े-बड़े गणित के विशेषज्ञ आपके आगे मूक हो गये।"
तब रामानुज बोलेः "मेरे गरीब पिता किन्हीं संत के पास जाते थे। जब उन महापुरूष ने मेरे पिता जी को मंत्रदीक्षा दी तब मैंने भी उन्हें सारस्वत्य मंत्र देने की प्रार्थना की तो उन योगी पुरूष ने कृपा करके मुझे मंत्र देकर ध्यान करने की कला भी सिखायी। उसी ध्यान के प्रभाव से मुझे अपने प्रश्नों का उत्तर तुरन्त मिल जाता है।"
प्रत्येक विद्यार्थी के पास आज अगर लौकिक विद्या के साथ सदगुरू प्रदत्त आध्यात्मिक विद्या भी हो तो जीवन में चार चाँद लग जाते हैं ऐसे अनेक उदाहरण हैं। थोड़ी-सी लौकिक विद्या हो परन्तु आध्यात्मिक विद्या की बाहुल्यता हो तो सातवीं कक्षा तक पढ़े रामानुजम गणित के विशेषज्ञ बन जाते हैं। किन्तु बहुत लौकिक विद्या हो तथा अध्यात्म विद्या से रहित हो, शिक्षा के साथ यदि दीक्षा नहीं हो तो उस विद्यार्थी का जीवन नशे तथा विकारों में फँस जाता है। अशिक्षित उतना विनाश नहीं कर सकता जितनी अदीक्षित। आज जिन विनाशकारी हथियारों ने सबके दिलों दहशत फैला रखी है ऐसे हथियार भी किन्हीं दीक्षाहीन शिक्षितों के द्वारा ही बनाये गये हैं।

Anusthana of Saraswatya Mantra
Regular and sincere jap of Saraswatya mantra leads to the development of the intellect and memory
power beyond our imagination. The elevated lives of great many students initiated by Pujya Bapuji in the Saraswatya mantra bear a testimony to this.
If a student wants to make his life brilliant, vibrant and divine and to emerge out victorious in all fronts of life, he must observe an Anushthana of Saraswatya mantra. The procedure for the Anushthana is as follows:
- The Anushthana of Saraswatya mantra is to be completed in seven days.
- 170 rounds of mala are to be done each day.
- One should wear only white clothes during these seven days.
- One should take a saltless diet during the Anushthana. Khir prepared from milk and rice is recommended.
- One should worship goddess Saraswati with white flowers before beginning the jap of the mantra. The Bhog offered to Goddess Saraswati should also be Khir.
- One should pray to Maa Saraswati for a pure and sharp intellect.
- One should sleep on the ground on a mat or a blanket and observe Mauna as much as possible.
- Jap done on a mala of crystal beads is all the more beneficial.
